Turkey is a country that frequently faces natural disasters due to its tectonic, seismic, topographic and climatic structure. On average, at least one earthquake with a magnitude of 5 to 6 occurs every year. Earthquakes are among the most important natural disasters, causing loss of life and property. Our country ranks third in the world in terms of human loss in earthquakes and eighth in terms of the number of people affected.
Within the framework of the Regulation on Increasing Efficiency in utilizing Energy Resources and Energy, energy efficiency studies are conducted in public buildings and studies are carried out to realize the determined potential.
In order to increase the earthquake resistance and improve the energy efficiency of the buildings of our country, the "Earthquake Resistance and Energy Efficiency Project in Public Buildings" will be carried out by the Ministry of Environment and Urbanization, General Directorate of Construction, under the guarantee of the Ministry of Treasury and Finance. The project will be financed by a World Bank loan.
The World Bank approved a loan of US$ 265 million for Turkey's Earthquake Resistance and Energy Efficiency Project in Public Buildings on 9.06.2021 to strengthen the earthquake resistance of public buildings and at the same time increase energy efficiency and reduce energy bills and carbon emissions. The project is expected to contribute significantly to our country's investments in improving earthquake resistance and its efforts to increase energy efficiency.
With the ‘Earthquake Resistance and Energy Efficiency Project in Public Buildings’ considerable energy savings will be achieved through strengthening or rebuilding of more than 140 public buildings (hospitals, schools, dormitories, etc.). Approximately 26,000 people using public buildings will directly benefit from the project.
